DEPARTURE
After your breakfast and departure from Dublin (or your pick up location within Ireland) we drive through the midlands of Ireland to head to the rugged West to the beautiful village of Kinvara, County Galway, where our epic adventure begins.
Kinvara
KINVARA
We will arrive in the picturesque fishing village of Kinvara meaning in Gaelic “The Head of the Sea” situated on the southern banks of Galway Bay. The most enchanting Dunguaire Castle in its magnificence is located to the east guarding the entrance of the village and whatever the weather it’s a picture-perfect memory to be had. There are an array of colourful pubs cafes and hotels, one being the Merriman which has the largest thatched roof in Ireland which overlook the fishing and “hooker boats” parked against the pier or enjoy an Irish coffee in Keoghs where often you will hear locals talking in Irish, their mother tongue.
Kinvara is also famous as being the gateway to the Burren in County Clare, our next stop.
Burren National Park
BURREN NATIONAL PARK
Back in your luxury vehicle you will now cruise on the Wild Atlantic Way into The Burren National Park (Irish: An Boireann, meaning “the stony place”). As your knowledgeable guide will explain it was formed millions of years ago when the area was under sea and has been dominated by glaciation to produce this “lunar terrain” where to be sure we’ll stop so you can see it first-hand. Take in the Atlantic views, watch the seagulls soar in that Atlantic wind as your eyes stretch into the distance to see the three inhabited Aran islands famous for their wild landscapes, distinctive knitted jumpers and cute cottages.
Doolin
DOOLIN
On the far side of the Burren on the Wild Atlantic Way and a few miles north of the Cliffs of Moher lies the renowned musical village of Doolin. It is known as a gateway to the ancient sites on the Aran Islands, which are just offshore. Doolin is a lively place full of personalities, tales and experiences and is home to some of the best eateries, activities and independent local shops that you will experience. You will find the people of Doolin are truly passionate about their village and a very welcoming community. They are also enormously proud to have in their midst the longest free hanging stalactite in the northern hemisphere measuring at 23 feet.
Cliffs of Moher
CLIFFS OF MOHER
We now reach the pinnacle of our adventure! Extending 12 kilometres along the coastline of County Clare, people have been visiting this sight in their numbers all because of one man, Sir Cornelius O’Brien. In 1835 he built an observation platform for tourists known as the O’Brien’s tower believing tourism would lift the area out of poverty. Today it attracts over 1.5 million visitors who, from the highest point of 214 metres (702 ft), will be able to take in incredible views of the twelve Bens, the Aran Islands and the Atlantic Ocean after which it’s plain sailing all the way to the East coast of North America where many claim their Irish ancestry. The thousands of seabirds that soar above their homes in the nooks and crannies of the rock face is just an amazing sight to be seen.
Bunratty Castle Photo Opportunity
BUNRATTY CASTLE
After only a short drive your driver/guide will take you to the 5th stop of the day. In the midst of the village of Bunratty there lies a wonderous 12th Century Tower House Castle. As we stop there will be the opportunity to take photos of Bunratty Castle. Here we also have the opportunity for a drink or snack or perhaps others would enjoy shopping at the local ‘Woollen Mills’ which are renowned for their hand knitted Aran sweaters we’ve all heard off.
